'Frankenstein' by Mary ShelleyFrankenstein is probaby the first 'mad scientist' story. Many films and books have been based on it or borrowed ideas from it. The idea for the book came from a dream Mary Shelley had on holiday in Switzerland. She saw a man creating something in a laboratory, and it coming to life. She saw him run away from it in horror and go to bed; and then wake up terrified, with it staring at him. The weather in Switzerland was so terrible that Mary and her friends decided to write horror stories. Frankenstein was the only story to be finished.
