PANDORA'S BOX/JAR

The God Zeus sends Prometheus and Epimetheus to Earth to create man and animals. He also grants them the ability to give their creations gifts. After a while, Prometheus realises that he has run out of gifts to give to mankind and takes, from a blacksmith (one version) or from the Gods (another version) the gift of fire. Until now, fire was only possessed by the Gods. As punishment for using the fire given to them, Zeus sends Pandora (a newly created girl made from clay) to Epimetheus who falls in love with her immediately. However, Zeus has also sent her with the gift of curiosity and a box which is to remain unopened. The box (or jar in other versions) is stowed away far from prying eyes. Until one day, Pandora cannot help herself and disobeys Epimetheus by opening the box and letting out a great many diseases and illness as well as misery and suffering. The only remaining item is HOPE and different versions go on to explain if HOPE is released or kept in the box.
