Reading Corner
Fact: to be a good writer, you need to be a keen reader. Studies have proven time and time again that exposure to a variety of books from a very young age give you the ability to write effective pieces yourself.
Why is this?
1- readers can pick up on the 'style' of a text- this is the way in which authors put words together, the tenses they write in and the language they use.
2- reading helps to increase our vocabulary (learn new words), as well as how to spell new and every day words.
3- reading provides us with an active imagination- it gives us ideas for writing and as children, we can write similar stories based on those that inspire us the most.
4- reading gives us the opportunity to discuss our preferences- what we like and don't like.
5- reading can encourage good discussion and the opportunity to share our ideas about many everyday topics.
6- reading can also help us (children and adults) to escape the everyday world and exist somewhere else for a short while.
7- reading brings the opportunity for children and parents/teachers to enjoy some quality time together.
8- reading can be the perfect way to wind down at the end of the day...
So, who is the Reading Corner for? Everyone! As a teacher, I have been very lucky to meet some incredibly
well-read children who at the extreme, have libraries in their bedrooms. I have been inspired by children to read more. At university I felt I was forced to read... now I enjoy reading, and admit that children's books have equally important messages as adults' books. Michael Morpurgo, for example, is one of my favourite authors and I have enjoyed numerous discussions with children about the books that they are reading.
