Ten Things...

A good one for the imagination... suggest a topic and ask the children to think of ten things that they would take with them or put into a bag on their journey there. For example: the topic is 'stranded on a tropical island' or 'a week in the Antarctic.' You could also use the ideas in a poem if you are feeling particularly adventurous. Use the following poem by Ian McMillan as inspiration for your writing.
Ten Things Found in a Wizard's Pocket
A dark night.
Some words that nobody could ever spell.
A glass of water, full to the top.
A large elephant.
A vest made from spider's webs.
A handkerchief the size of a car park.
A bill from the wand shop.
A bucket full of stars and planets, to mix with the dark night.
A bag of magic mints you can suck for ever.
A snoring rabbit.
Extras: can your children justify why they have chosen the items they have? This is great for discussion work in groups and for speaking and listening. Try it out... what's great about this activity is that you can change it regularly to another topic.
